Celebrities Back RCM Petition For More Midwifes
Well known faces from the world of sport and showbusiness have added their backing and support to the Royal College of Midwifes petition urging the government to put an extra 5,000 midwifes in place in the UK.

Arsenal and England footballer Theo Walcott, whose mum Lynn is a midwife has added his name to the petition alongside actors Pam Ferris, Stephen McGann, Terri Dwyer and filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Theo Walcott said he chose to support the RCM petition because England needs "more midwives and role models like my mum"

"I have grown up knowing how important midwives are because my mum was a midwife for the NHS and also worked independently. She taught mums about healthy eating and giving babies the best start in life," he said.

Actress Pam Ferris added: “Since Playing Sister Evangelina [in Call the Midwife] and learning about the profession, my respect for midwives has increased tenfold. I urge everyone to support them by signing the petition.”

To date, the petition has attracted more than 71,500 signatures and is due to close on 22nd August.
