Mother Leaves Note on Newborn Left in Car

Yesterday, the image of a newborn baby sat in a car seat went viral across the internet. Not unusual you say?? The mother had left a note on the child asking passers-by to call her if needed!

The mother in New Zealand, apparently went shopping, leaving her newborn sleeping in her car in the supermarket car park. She had left a note on top of the baby's blanket saying "My mum's in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything", and her mobile number was at the bottom.

A local witness who first found the child with the note said "We waited there for a little bit, wondering if the mum was just going to be two seconds and come back. My wife was not willing to leave the baby to go inside and look for the mother".

The first couple were then joined by another, and they decided to ring the mother who was eventually summoned.

The witness went on to say "As parents ourselves we know it is hard to get a baby to sleep, and once you start moving them they can wake up...we just left thinking this was a silly decision by a tired mother".
The image they had taken was then posted on Facebook, and within minutes had gone viral.

New Zealand law states that a parent can be fined for leaving a child alone without reasonable precautions.

A recent study showed that 37 babies and toddlers die every year because they are left in over-heating vehicles.
New Zealand police have said that they cannot start an investigation as there has been no legal complaint logged against the mother.
Senior Sergeant Justin Rakena said "If they do call us, we'll be acting on it. I don't know what the statistics are, but anecdotally you might have a kid left in a car once a fortnight, something like that".
