The official website of the Swedish royal court has confirmed that Princess Madeleine and her husband Christopher O'Neill are delighted to announce that they are expecting their first child.
Princess Madeleine married her American husband Christopher O’Neill in Stockholm on 8th June this year, just 12 weeks ago; the baby will be a honeymoon baby and is due in March next year. The couple live in New York, where the proud father-to-be works as a banker and Princess Madeleine works with the non-profit organisation World Childhood Foundation, which was founded by her mother, Queen Silvia of Sweden.
Princess Madeleine is fourth in line to the Swedish throne after her older sister Princess Victoria; Princess Victoria’s daughter, one-year-old Princess Estelle; and Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine and Princess Victoria's brother. Constitutional reform in 1980 changed the succession rules so that the eldest child became heir rather than the eldest male.
The princess will not be retiring from her work in the near future. A statement from the Swedish royal court confirmed: "No changes to the schedule of the princess's engagements and work for [the World Childhood Foundation] are planned during the fall of 2013."
