Kensington Palace has confirmed that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her second child.
There has been speculation for weeks that Kate was once again pregnant, but her pregnancy has only just been confirmed, despite her not having reached the normal 3-month milestone for making such an announcement. The statement said that the Duchess was once again suffering from acute morning sickness and is being attended by doctors at Kensington Palace.
This is in contrast to her first pregnancy, when she was treated at a private hospital, which was consequently besieged by the world’s press. Whilst the announcement will receive global coverage once again, the new baby will not have the same constitutional importance as the elder sibling, Prince George. The new baby will however, mean that Prince Harry is pushed further down the succession line.
Kate suffers from hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes extreme vomiting, in turn leading to dehydration and the loss of weight. It can also cause a build-up of toxins in urine and blood, known as ketosis.
Her pregnancy means that Kate will not be attending the upcoming opening of a Chinese study centre at an Oxford university with her husband, Prince William, and all future engagements will be managed on a day-by-day basis.
