I have now entered week 10 of my pregnancy and dare I say it I am beginning to feel a little more human again. I have actually stayed up until 10pm 2 nights in a row! If you would have asked me to do that a few weeks ago I would have literally broken down and cried.
It has however hit me this week how much this whole ‘experience’ is going to cost me.
This was a planned pregnancy and we worked out some rough figures about what things would cost but today I made my first ‘spreadsheet’ with costs. You will get to understand my love of spreadsheets over the next few weeks but this one is looking a little grim at the moment. I am only entitled to SMP so I guess the next few months will be save, save, save. Nearly impossible if you know me….
What is SMP (Statutory Maternity Pay)?
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is paid for up to 39 weeks. You get:
- 90% of your average weekly earnings (before tax) for the first 6 weeks
- £139.58 or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for the next 33 weeks
SMP is paid in the same way as your wages (eg monthly or weekly). Tax and National Insurance will be deducted.
There is quite a lot of information on the government website – https://www.gov.uk/maternity-pay-leave
It would however appear on first glance as myself and Chris earn a decent wage we are entitled to FUCK ALL else!!
How I have felt: Less sleepy!
My worries: Money – I need to do some more research on what I am entitled to.
