What Is I-Size

i-Size (ECE R129) introduced in July 2013 is a new regulation, designed to enhance the level of safety for children travelling by car.

The new i-Size regulation recommends rearward facing travel for babies until they are atleast 15 months of age.

The new classification (R129) makes it easier for parents to check their child is ready to move up to the next stage car seat, measuring by height (cm) as opposed to by weight groupings (kg), which is known as the R44/04 regulation.

i-Size R129 currently runs alongside R44/04, but as a higher standard of safety, is set to take lead in the near future.

Why I-Size?

1

Improved protection at higher forces for side and front impact and much better protection of your child’s head

2

Mandatory rearward facing travel for children up to 15 months old

3

i-Size uses IsoFix, which has less chance of being incorrectly fitted

4

i-Size car seats will fit most cars with IsoFix anchors

5

Length/Height of child classifcation (instead of weight)

Rearward Facing - The Safest Way To Travel

When a baby travels facing rearwards, the back of the protective car seat shell protects the head and spreads the forces of the impact over a greater area of the baby’s back.

The neck is kept in line with the spine of the child and thereby the vulnerable neck is better protected and could withstand higher forces.

Average head-size in proportion to body as infant grows

Many parents move their baby to the next stage car seat at approx. 9 months because:

They appear to have outgrown the car seat as their feet stick out of the seat shell.

The current law (ECE R44/04) allows a baby to move forward facing Group 1 car seat at 9kg.
